Spokane, Washington, has been struck by what residents describe as the city's worst wildfire disaster on record.[1] Nearly 65,000 people—approximately a quarter of the city's population—have been evacuated as three major fires spread rapidly across the region.[1] The blazes have broken through natural barriers including rivers, and currently remain less than 40 percent contained.[1]
Authorities have arrested local resident Aaron Farinacci, 37, on suspicion of deliberately igniting one of the fires during dry, windy conditions.[1] Farinacci has confessed to the charges and has been ordered to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.[1] Despite the massive scale of the disaster, no deaths or serious injuries have been reported so far.[1] However, many residents have lost their homes, and recovery efforts are already underway.[1] Officials have warned that routine activities such as yard work could trigger additional fires given current conditions.[1]
