Australia's Queensland state is at odds with the federal government over energy policy for data centres. Federal Energy Minister Chris Bowen has insisted that data centres must invest in or generate renewable energy, threatening to enforce the requirement through national legislation.[1] Queensland and the Northern Territory are the only two states and territories opposing the federal plan.[1]
Queensland Treasurer David Jannitski maintains that data centre energy should adopt a "comprehensive solution" that includes options such as natural gas.[1] "If there is natural gas peaking capacity available to power data centres, we don't want to rule out that option," Jannitski stated.[1]
Bowen warned that allowing an unregulated approach would result in higher bills and reduced reliability.[1] He stated: "We have been very explicit that this is a national approach, and we will use national legislation."[1]
The Prime Minister is expected to convene a national cabinet meeting within weeks to discuss the issue.[1]
