A young Eastern imperial eagle named Feliks has been released back into the wild following a dramatic international rescue operation.[1] The bird was captured by poachers in Syria after leaving its nest in July 2025, then smuggled across the Syrian-Lebanese border hidden in a potato sack.[1] Traffickers later kidnapped the eagle and demanded a ransom, but a Serbian conservation organization firmly refused to pay, citing concerns about supporting smuggling networks.[1]
The rescue effort involved extended negotiations between Serbian wildlife protectors and Lebanese partners.[1] The eagle was transported to a wildlife rehabilitation center in Beirut, where it recovered for over six months before being airlifted back to Serbia aboard a military aircraft, escorted by Serbian peacekeepers returning from Lebanon in June.[1] After further care at Palic Zoo, Feliks was released into its natural habitat in August.[1]
The successful recovery represents a significant achievement for the Serbian Bird Protection and Research Society, which has worked since 2017 to rebuild the species' population in the country from a single breeding pair to 29 pairs.[1]
