South African authorities have apprehended two Thai nationals in connection with attempts to illegally export protected parrot eggs through a major airport.1 A 50-year-old Thai man was arrested on August 20 at Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo International Airport while carrying 50 parrot eggs, while a 23-year-old Thai national was detained on July 16 at the same facility with 418 parrot eggs in his possession.1 The eggs, which belonged to species protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), were concealed in homemade incubators.1
Those convicted of illegally exporting CITES-protected species in South Africa face penalties ranging from fines of 10 million rand (approximately 460,000 British pounds) to up to ten years imprisonment, or both.1 Some of the seized parrot eggs have since been successfully hatched at the Pretoria National Zoo, demonstrating the viability of the confiscated specimens.1
