The ecological toll has been devastating. In 2022, high temperatures, low water levels, and elevated salinity caused approximately 1,000 tons of fish to die in the Oder River along the German-Polish border.[1] Authorities in Cologne have enforced strict water withdrawal bans, threatening residents who violate the restrictions with fines reaching €50,000.[1] While governments are exploring emergency measures such as dredging waterways and redirecting transport to rail networks, experts stress that fundamentally addressing the crisis requires reducing greenhouse gas emissions.[1]
