The Government Accountability Office (GAO), Congress's audit and investigative agency, released a report challenging the credibility of savings figures claimed by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).[1] The report found that the vast majority of DOGE's assertions about budget reductions cannot be substantiated through available documentation.
DOGE reported that it had saved $4.92 billion through cuts to grant programs.[1] However, the GAO was unable to verify this figure for the overwhelming majority of terminated grants. Of the 15,887 grants that DOGE indicated had been ended, the GAO could not verify the savings calculations for approximately 13,553 cases—roughly 96 percent—due to insufficient information provided in DOGE's public accounting system known as the "Wall of Receipts."[1] The GAO specifically stated that this database did not contain adequate details to support DOGE's methodology for computing the claimed savings.
The audit was conducted at the request of Senators Gary Peters and Richard Blumenthal in June 2025.[1]
