A federal judge in Massachusetts has cleared the way for the Trump administration to proceed with terminating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for South Sudanese nationals.[1] Judge Patty Saris rejected a legal challenge filed by the Africa Community Union, a nonprofit organization seeking to preserve protections for South Sudanese migrants.[1]
The ruling aligns with a June decision by the Supreme Court, which voted 6-3 to allow the government to revoke TPS for hundreds of thousands of Haitian and Syrian nationals.[1] The Department of Homeland Security initiated the termination process for South Sudan's TPS designation in November, affecting more than 232 South Sudanese nationals and at least 73 individuals with pending applications.[1] South Sudan's original TPS designation dates to 2011.[1]
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson, James Percival, stated on X: "All other TPS judges must do the same thing!"[1] Since 2001, TPS holders have paid approximately $7.8 billion annually in taxes and contributed $262 billion to the U.S. economy.[1]
