The Trump administration is advancing efforts to remove Lisa Cook from her position as a Federal Reserve governor, following a Supreme Court decision in June that allowed her to retain her seat.[1] The White House sent Cook a letter this week through presidential aide Dan Scavino notifying her that Trump is "considering the removal of your position" and providing her until August 26 to respond.[1]
Cook faces mortgage fraud allegations stemming from a criminal referral made last August by the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, Bill Pulte.[1] She is accused of falsely claiming two properties—one in Ann Arbor, Michigan and another in Atlanta—as her primary residence in 2021 loan applications.[1] Cook has denied the allegations, with her attorney Abby Lowell arguing that Cook spent most of her time at the Ann Arbor property purchased in 2005, characterizing the Atlanta apartment as an "isolated notation" that does not indicate fraudulent intent.[1]
In June, the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in favor of allowing Cook to keep her Federal Reserve position.[1] However, Chief Justice John Roberts indicated in his opinion that Trump could attempt her removal again.[1]
