Researchers from the University of Zurich monitored 12 personnel stationed at Antarctica's Concordia research facility over a 10-month winter campaign, conducting four survey assessments during the period.[1] The study employed wearable sensors to automatically measure the physical proximity and contact duration between team members.[1]
The research revealed a counterintuitive finding: increased frequency of interpersonal contact correlated with higher levels of conflict, reduced trust, and diminished team performance.[1] According to Professor Jan Schmutz, "In small teams under extreme conditions, more contact doesn't automatically equate to social support, but can actually increase tensions."[1] As the mission progressed, personnel gradually subdivided into smaller social groups organized along linguistic and national lines.[1] These insights carry significant implications for assembling and managing teams for future lunar and Martian exploration missions, where extreme isolation and confined quarters will present similar psychological and social challenges.[1]
