Barret Zoph has joined Google as Vice President of Research, where he will focus on applying his reinforcement learning and post-training expertise to the Gemini model 1. This transition occurs just five months after Zoph departed OpenAI in June, where he was in charge of AI enterprise sales 1. His return to OpenAI earlier this year followed a brief entrepreneurial venture; in October 2024, after a two-year tenure at the company, he left to co-found the AI startup Thinking Machines alongside Mira Murati 1. However, in January 2025, Zoph and fellow co-founder Luke Metz left Thinking Machines to rejoin OpenAI before his recent departure for Google 1.
