Alaska authorities have identified the four men who died when a small plane crashed into shallow water near the remote coastal town of Seldovia 1. The Alaska Department of Public Safety confirmed the pilot was 68-year-old Eric Middlebrook of Anchorage 1. The three passengers were identified as 65-year-old Ronald Schmidt, 20-year-old Lance Schmidt, and 82-year-old Daniel Simons, all from California 1. The aircraft, a Piper PA-24, departed from Anchorage en route to Seldovia Airport, which is located about 135 miles (220 kilometers) southwest of Anchorage 1.
After the crash, the plane came to rest in about 15 feet (4.6 meters) of water in the Seldovia Slough 1. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the accident 1. The incident occurred less than a week after another plane crashed near a remote military base in western Alaska, killing all eight people on board 1.
