尼泊爾政府取消了原定8月23日至29日在加德滿都大學舉行的第17屆國際藏學研討會[1]。尼泊爾政府首席秘書卡爾基親自致電要求校方停止舉辦該活動[1]，官方以安全風險為由宣布取消[1]。
中國駐尼泊爾使館自6月起就會議事宜向尼方表達關切[1]。7月21日，中國駐尼泊爾大使張茂明會面要求尼方對可能發表支持西藏言論的與會者保持「警惕」[1]。同月29日，印順法師訪問尼泊爾期間也與當地官員討論了此次會議[1]。此前尼泊爾內政部長古隆曾公開表示會議不會被取消[1]。
會議主辦方稱這是純學術活動，籌備歷時4年[1]，約100名中國學者已完成註冊參加[1]。
Nepal's government has canceled the 17th International Seminar on Tibetan Studies, originally scheduled for August 23-29 at Kathmandu University, following sustained pressure from China.[1] The Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu began expressing concerns about the conference from June onward, and in July, Chinese Ambassador Zhang Maoming met with Nepalese officials to urge them to remain "vigilant" regarding potential participants who might voice pro-Tibet statements.[1] Nepal's government ultimately cited security risks as the reason for the cancellation, despite Interior Minister Gulo having previously stated publicly that the event would proceed.[1]
The conference organizers emphasized that the gathering was a purely academic endeavor that had taken four years to prepare, with approximately 100 Chinese scholars already registered to participate.[1] Nepal's chief secretary personally telephoned university officials to demand the event be halted.[1] Buddhist monk Yin Shun visited Nepal on July 29 and discussed the conference with local officials during that period.[1]
