Australia's prostate cancer foundation has released updated clinical guidelines designed to enhance screening practices and catch aggressive cases earlier.[1] The revised recommendations advise men aged 50 to 69 to undergo screening every two years, while those at elevated risk—including men with BRCA2 gene mutations and a family history of the disease—should begin testing from age 45.[1] Men over 70 with a life expectancy exceeding seven years are also encouraged to have screening performed every two years.[1]
The new guidelines mark a significant shift in clinical practice by recommending active monitoring rather than immediate surgery or radiation therapy for patients diagnosed with low-grade prostate cancer.[1] To reduce unnecessary invasive procedures, the guidelines further suggest that magnetic resonance imaging scans be performed prior to biopsy.[1] These changes reflect efforts to balance early intervention with considerations about overtreatment, as approximately 29,000 Australian men are diagnosed with prostate cancer annually, with around 4,000 deaths attributed to the disease.[1] Australia's five-year survival rate for prostate cancer stands at 95 percent.[1]
The shift toward more refined screening protocols has been prompted by cases like that of patient Mike Watson, who was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer at age 59 and subsequently underwent robotic surgery, 33 radiation therapy sessions, and six months of hormone treatment.[1] To support implementation of the new guidelines, the federal government has allocated 320,000 Australian dollars toward physician education and public awareness campaigns.[1]
