The Central United Front Work Department has issued a commemorative statement marking the 150th birth anniversary of Chen Shutong, a prominent democratic revolutionary, a national leader of the People's Republic of China, and founder of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce [1].
Born in 1876 in Renhe County, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Chen Shutong participated in the Hundred Days' Reform movement in 1898 and obtained the jinshi degree through the imperial examination system in 1903, receiving an appointment as an editor of the Hanlin Academy [1]. He traveled to Japan for further studies in 1904 and secretly joined the Restoration Society in 1910, gradually establishing connections with the Communist Party following its founding in 1921 [1]. During the Second Sino-Japanese War and subsequent liberation struggle, Chen remained steadfastly loyal to the Party, notably refusing to sign the Kuomintang's "Thousand-Person Telegram" in July 1948 [1].
Following his safe arrival in Beiping in March 1949, Chen played a crucial role in the founding of New China [1]. He was selected as vice chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Preparatory Committee on June 15, 1949, and subsequently attended the First Plenary Session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in September, becoming vice chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC and a member of the Central People's Government Council [1]. Chen participated in the National Day ceremony on October 1, 1949, as a member of the Central People's Government Council [1]. In 1951, Premier Zhou Enlai nominated him to serve as chairman of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce [1]. Under his leadership, by the end of 1956, ninety-nine percent of private industrial enterprises and 82.2 percent of private commercial establishments had been incorporated into joint public-private ventures or cooperative commercial operations [1]. Chen Shutong passed away on February 17, 1966, in Beijing, with Zhou Enlai presiding over his memorial service [1].
