Hospital emergency departments across the United States have documented a significant increase in cases of cannabis hyperemesis syndrome, a condition causing severe nausea and vomiting among frequent marijuana users.[1] According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emergency room diagnoses of the syndrome rose 16 percent between October of last year and May of this year.[1] The CDC's analysis drew data from approximately 7,500 medical facilities nationwide and identified nearly 200,000 emergency visits with related symptoms spanning from January 2023 through summer 2025.[1]
The spike in recorded cases reflects both genuine disease incidence and improved diagnostic tracking.[1] A new diagnostic code for cannabis hyperemesis syndrome that took effect in October of last year enabled more accurate recording and monitoring of a condition that had previously been significantly underreported.[1] The CDC estimates that approximately 2.75 million Americans experience this syndrome annually.[1] Certain populations showed the largest increases, including adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 24, female teenagers, Black individuals, and American Indian and Alaska Native populations.[1] Alana Vivolo-Kantor, one of the study's authors at the CDC, described the rise in cases among young people as a "surprising finding."[1]
