FIFA President Gianni Infantino continues to seek backing from African football bodies following the withdrawal of his controversial private financing plan.[1] While the African Football Confederation has not issued an official position, five African nations represented on the FIFA Council have publicly endorsed Infantino: Egypt, Morocco, Niger, Mauritania, and Comoros.[1]
Much of African support for Infantino stems from the FIFA Forward development fund launched in 2016, which has provided financial assistance to numerous African football associations.[1] Morocco's Football Federation President Fouzi Lekjaa described Infantino's decision to withdraw the disputed FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal as "wise."[1] Nigeria stands to receive up to $8 million in FIFA Forward funding, with current projects including the reconstruction of the Abuja NFF Technical Centre at approximately $4.88 million.[1] South Africa's Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie characterized Infantino as "very friendly" to African football on social media,[1] while Gambia's Football Federation President Lamin Kaba Bajo indicated he would support Infantino's re-election bid in 2027.[1]
