Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared on Wednesday that he has no confidence in FIFA President Gianni Infantino, characterizing the executive's governance approach as fundamentally flawed.[1] Carney stated that Infantino's conduct "should be fatal," referring to the FIFA leader's proposal to establish a $2 billion company that would introduce private investment into World Cup operations without consulting senior officials beforehand.[1]
The proposed structure would have involved private investors, including members of the Kushner family, in managing the tournament.[1] The plan triggered significant opposition from European football authorities and national federations; the Union of European Football Associations' 55 member associations had agreed to boycott the World Cup and other FIFA competitions if the initiative proceeded.[1] The North, Central American and Caribbean Confederation and the Asian Football Confederation also opposed the proposal, which Infantino subsequently abandoned.[1]
Carney's criticism joins growing international skepticism about Infantino's leadership.[1] British Prime Minister Keir Starmer similarly described Infantino as "the wrong man to lead world football" in comments made the previous Sunday.[1] FIFA's next presidential election is scheduled for March in Rabat, Morocco, with candidate registration closing on November 18.[1]
