David Owori, a 27-year-old captain of SC Villa and international player for Uganda's national team, was fatally attacked during an attempted robbery in Kampala on Tuesday evening.[1][2] Assailants wielding paving stones struck Owori as they attempted to steal his mobile phone and other belongings.[1][2] Passers-by discovered him unconscious and transported him to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.[2]
Owori's death has prompted widespread mourning across Uganda's sporting community. The Ugandan Parliament observed a moment of silence in his honor on Wednesday.[1] SC Villa released a statement describing their loss: "We lost not just a player — we lost a leader, a brother and a friend."[2] The Uganda Football Federation added that "David was not only a footballer. He was a leader and an inspiration to a generation."[1] Uganda's National Sports Council noted that "Ugandan sports has recently suffered many similar tragedies."[1]
