Hong Kong Financial Secretary Paul Chan has instructed the termination of an investigation into Apple Daily's parent company, Next Media Group, following the conviction of the company's founder Jimmy Lai [1]. Chan indicated that continuing the probe was no longer necessary given the circumstances surrounding the media organization [1].
The decision comes after Lai received a 20-year prison sentence in February of this year [1]. The High Court had already ordered the liquidation of Next Media Group in December 2021, and the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited revoked the company's listing status on January 12, 2023 [1]. Additionally, multiple senior executives of the organization have been convicted and imprisoned on national security charges: Zhang Jianhong received 6 years and 9 months, Feng Weigang received 10 years, Luo Weigang received 10 years, Yang Qingqi received 7 years and 3 months, Lin Wenzong received 10 years, and Chen Peimin received 7 years [1].
