The novel explores the rebellious image of the protagonist Judy Woolcot and her influence on female characters in later Australian literature 1. It openly models itself on "Little Women" (1868), with the character name Meg and the author Louisa May Alcott echoed in the Woolcot family name 1. The story features Judy Woolcot, who dies by breaking her back to save The General from a fallen ringbarked gum tree 1. Additionally, a dialogue in the book criticizing colonization was removed by a London publisher starting from approximately the fifth edition in 1896, and it was not restored until the centenary edition in 1994 1.
