The commission was established in January 2025 in response to an attack on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach on December 14, 2025, which resulted in 15 deaths 1. It officially opened in February and conducted nine rounds of public hearings between May and August 1. During the proceedings, it was noted that Bialik College in Melbourne reported a 230% increase in its security costs since 2022 1. The commission has adopted the definition of antisemitism established by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance 1.
Regarding its progress, the commission has released an interim report containing 14 recommendations, all of which have been accepted by the federal government 1.
