A long-term brain study conducted at Lund University has identified a significant connection between common cardiovascular and lifestyle risk factors and brain damage associated with dementia.[1] Researchers followed nearly 500 participants with an average age of 65 years over a four-year period and found that most modifiable risk factors—including smoking, high blood pressure, heart disease, and high cholesterol—were associated with accelerated accumulation of cerebrovascular damage and white matter changes in the brain.[1]
The findings suggest that adopting healthier lifestyle choices could potentially slow the onset of dementia.[1] Additionally, the study revealed that diabetes was linked to increased accumulation of amyloid-beta protein, another hallmark of Alzheimer's disease pathology.[1] The research was published in The Journal of Prevention of Alzheimer's Disease, volume 13, issue 2, article number 100448, in 2026.[1]
