Director Ryan Murphy has brought a new psychological thriller to audiences with "The Shards," now streaming on Disney+.[1] The series adapts Bret Easton Ellis's 2023 novel of the same name, transporting viewers to September 1981 Los Angeles through the eyes of Bret, an elite high school student portrayed by Igby Rigney.[1] Bret becomes increasingly suspicious that Robert, a new classmate played by Homer Gere, may be connected to a series of campus murders unfolding around them.[1]
Rather than relying on conventional horror tropes, the series employs psychological storytelling to explore contemporary concerns about outsiders, social anxiety, and nostalgia.[1] The ensemble cast also includes Hayes Warner as Debbie, Graham Campbell as Thom, and Kaia Gerber as Susan, navigating the tension-filled atmosphere of their school.[1] Murphy, known for creating "American Horror Story," draws from Ellis's background as the author of "American Psycho" (1991) to craft a narrative that resonates with present-day audiences despite its period setting.[1]
