Britain's Prevent counter-terrorism programme has reached a historic milestone, receiving 10,293 referrals in the year to September 2025, marking a 39% increase from the previous year's 7,408 referrals and the highest figure recorded in eleven years.[1] Right-wing extremism referrals surged to 2,103 cases, up 20% from 1,480 the year before, while Islamic extremism referrals declined to 860 from 945.[1]
The data reveals that young people aged 11 to 15 accounted for the largest share of referrals at 3,655 cases, representing 36% of the total.[1] Approximately 18% of those referred were identified as autistic, while 36% of referrals involved individuals with mental health or neurodiversity concerns.[1] White individuals comprised 68% of referred cases, with 3,600 out of 5,315 referrals in that demographic.[1] Security Minister Dan Jarvis stated that over 6,000 people had been moved away from violent ideologies through the scheme.[1] Officials attributed the referral surge partly to the July 2024 Southport terror attack.[1]
