The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) is expanding its presence in Ohio through two significant developments involving the state's most historic and newest temples.[1] The Kirtland Temple, built in 1836, stands as the oldest house of worship in the Mormon movement, with approximately 1,000 people attending its original dedication ceremony.[1] In 2024, the LDS Church acquired the Kirtland Temple and associated historical properties from the Community of Christ for $192.5 million, securing ownership of this foundational religious site.[1]
Complementing this acquisition, the LDS Church is preparing to dedicate a newly constructed temple in Independence, located 30 miles from Kirtland, with a scheduled dedication on August 16.[1] This new facility will mark the first fully operational LDS temple to be completed in northern Ohio in nearly two centuries.[1] The new buildings incorporate dome design elements that pay homage to the original 1836 structure.[1] The Independence dedication will occur simultaneously with the dedication of another temple in Brazil on the same date.[1] More than 53,000 visitors have attended the historic Kirtland Temple in 2025.[1]
