A severe mudslide originating from the Nepal side struck the Gyirong Port in Gyirong County, Shigatse City, Tibet, at around 10:30 a.m. on August 26, causing significant casualties and leaving many missing 1. The disaster has severely disrupted local infrastructure, leaving roads, communications, and power supplies on the Chinese mainland side leading to the Gyirong Port completely cut off 1.
In response to the tragedy, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council expressed condolences and concern to the relevant authorities on the Chinese mainland on behalf of the government 1. The Straits Exchange Foundation is currently monitoring the safety of Taiwanese nationals in the region, with 51 registered Taiwanese nationals currently in Tibet 1.
Meanwhile, foreign media reported that the Nepal Tourism Board stated at least 384 tourists remain missing following the disaster 1. The missing individuals include 93 Nepalese citizens, 105 Indian citizens, 3 U.S. citizens, and 12 British citizens 1.
