A Chinese Coast Guard vessel collided with the People's Liberation Army Navy's guided-missile destroyer Guilin while pursuing a Philippine patrol boat in waters near Scarborough Shoal on August 11, 2025, resulting in severe damage to the bow of the coast guard ship.[1] The Chinese government did not publicly announce the incident at the time, but recently confirmed the accident through the conferment of martyrdom status on two personnel who died in the collision.[1]
The two fatalities were identified as Yi Xinyu, a China Coast Guard soldier, and Cheng Long, an enforcement officer with the Third Bureau of the South China Sea Fleet under the China Coast Guard.[1] A spokesperson for the China Coast Guard, Gan Yu, stated that the coast guard personnel had employed necessary measures including surveillance and interception of the Philippine vessel in accordance with the law, and that "on-site operations were conducted professionally, in a standardized manner, and were lawful and justified."[1]
