An AP News investigation has revealed that the Trump administration's immigration enforcement operations have resulted in the detention of more than 50 parents and spouses of active-duty military members, with at least 6 having been deported and 1 who self-deported.[1] The detentions have occurred since the start of Trump's second term.[1]
In response to inquiries about the cases, the Department of Homeland Security stated that "military service to the United States does not automatically confer legal immigrant status, nor does it exempt foreign nationals from the consequences of violating U.S. immigration laws."[1]
Meanwhile, the Department of Justice moved in April to overturn convictions of Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes and others.[1] Federal Judge Amit Mehta, while criticizing the government's position, reluctantly approved the Justice Department's request to dismiss seditious conspiracy charges against members of the far-right militia group related to the January 6 Capitol incident.[1] In his ruling, Judge Mehta wrote that the government was "asking for the pardon of these defendants for crimes against the United States itself," but stated he had no choice but to grant the request.[1]
