Pakistan's military helicopters airlifted the bodies of five climbers from Broad Peak on Thursday, nearly a week after an avalanche on July 31 claimed multiple lives from an international mountaineering expedition.[1] The disaster struck a ten-member international climbing team, resulting in the recovery of eight bodies so far, including renowned British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja, as well as Chinese climber Zhong Wang and Nepali climbers Nima Sherpa, Gyalu Sherpa, and Kilu Sherpa.[1] Two climbers remain missing following the incident.[1]
The recovered remains are being transported to Islamabad, where Pakistan's government and relevant national embassies will coordinate their handling and repatriation.[1] The international team consisted of members from Nepal, Oman, Pakistan, China, the United Kingdom, and the United States.[1] Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar expressed condolences to the families of those who perished,[1] while Alpine Club Chairman Irfan Arshad Khan described the tragedy as "one of Pakistan's deadliest mountaineering disasters."[1]
