Shenzhen Children's Hospital has officially inaugurated its Department of Plastic and Burn Surgery, integrating multidisciplinary resources including burn treatment, trauma reconstruction, wound repair, scar prevention, and congenital defect management.[1] The newly established department provides comprehensive one-stop diagnostic and therapeutic services for children experiencing burn injuries, trauma, scarring, and deformities, emphasizing a full-spectrum care approach that encompasses functional recovery, aesthetic improvement, psychological support, and long-term follow-up.[1]
Children aged 0 to 12 account for 30 to 50 percent of all burn injury cases.[1] The pediatric population faces particular vulnerability due to underdeveloped skin barriers and thin epidermis, which predispose young patients to developing hypertrophic scarring.[1] The department, led by Dr. Xiong Zhu, provides clinical coverage for hand and foot deformities, polydactyly, syndactyly, macrodactyly, pigmented nevi, hemangiomas, and traumatic reconstruction.[1] As a designated institution responsible for promoting appropriate technology in musculoskeletal system congenital defect screening for Guangdong Province, the hospital strengthens its capacity to address these pediatric conditions through the new surgical specialty.[1]
