The University of Greater Manchester has terminated the contract of Vice-Chancellor Sir George Holmes following years of serious allegations and an ongoing police investigation.[1] Holmes, who led the institution for two decades, was suspended in May of last year and has now formally departed from his position, with the contract termination taking effect earlier this week.[1]
The departure comes amid a criminal investigation by Greater Manchester Police into suspected fraudulent activity and bribery totaling more than £1 million between 2014 and 2025.[1] Three individuals were arrested in July this year on suspicion of money laundering—two men in their 60s and a woman in her 50s—with both men additionally suspected of fraud and one man suspected of bribery.[1] All three were released on bail without being charged.[1] Greg Walker has assumed the role of acting vice-chancellor during this period.[1]
