Ukraine's military has conducted long-range strikes against two Russian oil refineries located over 1,300 kilometers from the front line, targeting the Bashneft-Novayl facility in Bashkortostan and the Slavneft-Yaroslavl refinery in Yaroslavl region.[1] President Zelenskyy commented on the operation, stating that "the Ukrainian Armed Forces are striking the aggressor's facilities...Russia must choose peace."[1]
The strikes come as Russia continues its assault on Ukrainian cities. A nighttime attack on the city of Balakliia and Sumy region resulted in at least six deaths and 36 injuries.[1] In a separate incident, Vladimir Tkachuk, founder of the Russian drone manufacturer Uraldronzavod, was severely wounded in a car bomb attack in Yekaterinburg, with his bodyguard killed in the explosion.[1] Uraldronzavod produces low-cost FPV drones known as Upyr or Ghoul, which are widely deployed by Russian forces.[1] Tkachuk also operates the Telegram channel "Obsessed with War," which has over 500,000 followers.[1]
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has pledged to address Ukraine's shortage of air defense missiles as an "urgent" priority.[1] Meanwhile, U.S. negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are planning a visit to Kyiv this month.[1]
