Awer Mabil, an established figure in Australian football, has signed a three-year contract with Melbourne City, marking his return to domestic competition after 11 years playing professionally in Europe.[1] The 30-year-old forward, who has earned 39 caps for the Socceroos, brings extensive international experience to the A-League following stints across Denmark, Turkey, Portugal, Spain, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland.[1] During his overseas career, Mabil competed in more than 300 matches and participated in prestigious European competitions including the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.[1]
Mabil will join fellow Socceroos members Aziz Behich and Mathew Leckie at Melbourne City, strengthening the squad's attacking depth.[1] The Australian striker's arrival comes as Melbourne City prepares for the upcoming season, with their opening match scheduled for October 17 in Auckland, followed by their first Melbourne derby against Melbourne Victory on October 24 at AAMI Park.[1]
Beyond his professional achievements, Mabil has demonstrated commitment to social causes through his non-profit organization Barefoot to Boots, which supports refugee communities.[1] He was recognized for his contributions with the Australian Young Achiever Award in 2023.[1]
