Wisconsin Democrats held a gubernatorial primary on Tuesday that pitted moderate David Crowley, endorsed by Governor Tony Evers, against progressive democratic socialist Francesca Hong.[1] The contest represents another significant clash between the party's moderate and progressive wings following a similar matchup in Michigan just one week prior, where progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed narrowly defeated moderate Representative Haley Stevens.[1]
The Wisconsin race will help determine how Democrats approach their November general election challenge against Republican Tom Tiffany, described as one of Congress's most conservative members and a staunch Trump supporter.[1] Crowley initially withdrew from the race on July 8 but re-entered on July 18 with Evers's backing, while former Lieutenant Governor Mandela Barnes and Sara Rodriguez subsequently exited but remained on the ballot.[1] A Marquette University poll from late July showed Hong leading among other candidates.[1]
Hong's past social media posts have drawn scrutiny, including calls to abolish Thanksgiving, criticism of Valentine's Day, and statements supporting police budget cuts.[1] She has recently clarified that she does not support abolishing police departments.[1]
