Kirsty Wright, a whistleblower scientist hired by the Queensland government to oversee reforms at a forensics laboratory embroiled in a DNA scandal, has confirmed her departure from the position after approximately seven months.[1] Wright began her part-time reform oversight role in late September 2024 under a 12-month contract but resigned in May.[1]
During her tenure, a systematic review uncovered significant errors across 904 DNA statements issued by Forensic Science Queensland over the past three years.[1] The errors included incorrect digit transcription and insertion of wrong dates.[1] Of the approximately 300 statements reviewed to date, between 10 and 15 percent of cases were found to contain errors.[1] The affected DNA statements relate to criminal investigations that may include murder and rape cases.[1]
