Harrison Young, a veteran banker who has held senior positions across major American financial institutions and central banks, has authored a new book that blends memoir with practical guidance on banking operations and risk management.[1] Young's career spans decades in the financial sector, beginning at Citibank in 1971 before joining Morgan Stanley in 1975.[1] He later served as a banking regulator for the U.S. Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), held roles as vice chair for Asia and chair for Australia at Morgan Stanley, and served as a non-executive director of the Australian Federal Bank from 2007 to 2017.[1] Additionally, Young became the first foreign executive approved by the People's Bank of China to lead China International Capital Corporation.[1]
Titled "Prudence and Ambition," Young's book examines critical issues in modern banking including the distinction between investment and commercial banking, capital regulation frameworks, and the importance of risk culture within financial institutions.[1] Through his professional experiences, Young addresses pivotal moments in financial history, drawing lessons from events such as the American savings and loan crisis of the late 1980s, which resulted in the failure of over 1,000 savings and loan institutions and cost taxpayers approximately $13 billion in deposit insurance payouts.[1] In the book, Young reflects on the nature of banking leadership, writing that "survival means managing the unmeasurable, preparing for an unknowable future."[1]
