The U.S. Senate voted 51–44 on Wednesday to confirm Erica Schwartz as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.[1] Schwartz's confirmation came despite a lackluster performance during her confirmation hearing last month, when she failed to adequately reassure senators about her ability to counter the anti-vaccine positions of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.[1]
The confirmation ends nearly a year of vacancy in the CDC director position, which opened after Kennedy removed predecessor Susan Monalez in August of the previous year.[1] Monalez had been dismissed for refusing to rubber-stamp vaccine recommendations from a panel of Kennedy-selected advisors.[1] Schwartz holds a medical degree, a master's degree in public health, and a law degree.[1] She previously served as chief medical officer of the U.S. Coast Guard and as deputy health secretary during the first Trump administration.[1]
