Donavan McKinney defeated incumbent Representative Shri Thanedar in the Democratic primary for Michigan's 13th Congressional District, a victory that virtually ensures Detroit will have a Black member of Congress for the first time since 2022.[1] Thanedar, who was seeking his third consecutive term, was unable to retain his seat against McKinney's challenge.[1] McKinney will now face Republican candidate Taras Nykoriak in the November general election.[1]
The outcome carries significant meaning for a city with a predominantly Black population that had long held such representation. Detroit had not sent a Black congressman to Washington since 2022, breaking a historical continuity that included Charles Diggs Jr., who was first elected in 1955, and John Conyers, who was elected in 1965 and served for more than 50 years.[1] McKinney has secured backing from U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.[1] Thanedar, a former founder of a chemical testing laboratory whom he sold for $20 million, had won the 2022 primary to claim his current seat.[1]
