Northern Territory Labor MP Luke Gosling has temporarily stepped down from his role as the Special Envoy for Defence, Veterans' Affairs and Northern Australia 1. This follows his being charged with the alleged assault of Northern Territory Administrator David Connolly, as well as a subsequent breach of bail conditions 1. He is scheduled to appear at the Darwin Local Court on September 30 to face the two charges 1.
The alleged assault occurred on July 18 during the NT Thailand Grand Festival in Darwin 1. Police later accused Gosling of violating his bail conditions on August 14 1. These conditions require him to stay at least 50 meters away from Government House and maintain a distance of more than 15 meters from Connolly when attending the same event 1. Opposition Leader Angus Taylor has urged Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to suspend Gosling, joining other political figures in calling for his suspension 1.
