Iran has announced that it has reached an agreement with Oman regarding a shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, with negotiations in their final stages.[1] Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei stated that both countries have agreed on the geographical coordinates of the route.[1] However, Iran emphasized that security concerns persist in the strait, citing U.S. naval blockades and what it characterizes as aggressive threats against Iran and its interests.[1]
U.S. President Trump warned on Tuesday that Iran would face "very severe" consequences if the strait does not reopen "very soon".[1] American officials have indicated that negotiations have progressed to a point where shipping could potentially resume later this week.[1] Iran has maintained that it is not engaged in negotiations with the United States and has no plans to do so.[1]
Since the United States and Israel launched military action against Iran in late February, Iran has largely closed the strait, a critical waterway through which approximately one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments pass.[1]
