Multiple wildfires surrounding Spokane, Washington's second-largest city, have destroyed approximately 850 structures and forced roughly 67,000 people to evacuate [1]. Firefighters have managed to establish firebreaks around three of the fires by taking advantage of cooler weather conditions [1]. However, conditions are expected to worsen this week, with temperatures forecast to rise from the 80s in recent days to the low 90s, accompanied by drier wind conditions [1].
One of the fires was deliberately set by 37-year-old Aaron F. Farinacci from Spokane, who has been arrested and is expected to appear in court on Thursday [1]. Two additional fires have also been attributed to human causes [1]. Across Washington State, 16 uncontrolled wildfires spanning more than 672 square miles are currently active, with more than 7,000 firefighters engaged in suppression efforts [1]. So far, no deaths have been reported from the fires [1].
