The intersection of Darebin Boulevard, Hickford Street, and Borrie Street outside Reservoir Views Primary School in Melbourne's north has become a traffic hazard following a problematic redesign that reopened in May 2025 without any lane markings or signage.[1] The confusion has forced school principal Steve Stafford to personally direct traffic and escort students across the road, a measure he describes as a necessity given the safety risks. "I'm surprised we haven't had a serious injury," Stafford stated.[1]
The dangers have not been theoretical. A nine-year-old student, Indika Kelly, recounted that her friend was nearly struck by a vehicle weeks earlier.[1] Concerned parents and school staff have launched a petition calling for an independent review and reconstruction of the intersection, gathering 350 signatures in support—250 from parent Christine Speziale's petition and 100 from the school community.[1] The situation is set to intensify when a new kindergarten with a capacity of 99 children opens at a corner of the intersection in October 2026.[1]
In response to the ongoing concerns, Darebin Council approved plans on Tuesday to undertake upgrades across the entire Darebin area over the next four to six years.[1]
