Sheikh Hasina, the exiled former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has vowed to return to her country by the end of the year despite facing a death sentence handed down in absentia.[1] The 78-year-old announced her intention to return to Bangladesh in December during a press conference held at the Foreign Correspondents' Club in New Delhi, where she has been in exile for two years.[1] "They may put me in a cell. They may kill me. Anything may happen, but still I have to go," Hasina stated at the event.[1]
Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia by Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal in November of the previous year on charges related to a crackdown on protests.[1] The United Nations has estimated that around 1,400 people may have died during the demonstrations, though supporters of Hasina have cited figures closer to 800 deaths.[1] Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, described her current circumstances in India, noting that "She is staying with the full services and security of a head of state."[1] Meanwhile, Bangladesh has banned domestic media outlets from broadcasting or publishing statements made by Hasina.[1]
