PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp announced on Tuesday in Atlanta a new postseason format that will take effect beginning with the 2028 season 1. The revamped postseason will include the BMW Championship and a newly structured, two-week Tour Championship hosted across two cities, utilizing a match-play format for the top 32 qualifying players 1. Highlighting the exclusivity of the new system, Rolapp emphasized that it will be "one of the toughest to qualify for and one of the toughest to win" 1.
At the beginning of the season, there will be up to 20 tournaments, with the top 90 players in the standings advancing to the BMW Championship 1. From there, the top 32 competitors will move on to the two-week Tour Championship 1. These 32 players will be divided into eight groups of four, with the top two finishers from each group advancing to a single-elimination bracket 1. Furthermore, the new format will separate the Tour Championship title from the overall FedEx Cup championship 1.
Rory McIlroy is the only player to have won the FedEx Cup three times 1. Historical records show instances where the two titles were split, such as in 2009 when Tiger Woods won the FedEx Cup while Phil Mickelson won the Tour Championship 1. Similarly, in 2018, Tiger Woods won the Tour Championship while Justin Rose won the FedEx Cup 1.
