Slovakia and Austria both shattered their temperature records on Wednesday amid an intense heat wave gripping the region.[1] Slovakia's southern town of Kamenická recorded a new national high of 41.4°C (106.5°F), marking the third time the country has broken its temperature record this summer.[1] Austria's Bad Deutsch-Altenburg registered 41.2°C (106.1°F), establishing a new national record.[1]
The extreme heat reflects Europe's alarming warming trend. Europe has experienced temperature increases roughly twice as fast as the global average since the 1980s, making it the fastest-warming continent globally.[1] The region is enduring an exceptionally hot and dry summer characterized by massive wildfires and evacuations.[1] Slovakia's previous record temperature, set in 2007, was 40.3°C (104.5°F).[1] The heat wave has extended across Central Europe, with the Czech Republic and Hungary also recently setting their own record highs this summer.[1]
