Malaysian-Australian writer Omar Musa has won the 2026 Miles Franklin Literary Award for his second novel "Fierceland," claiming the AU$60,000 prize.[1] The multigenerational family saga, which took six years and 21 drafts to complete, spans Borneo's rainforests, Los Angeles, and Sydney while following the story of a palm oil magnate and his two children.[1] The narrative weaves together ancient Malay ghost stories with environmental themes.[1]
"Fierceland" has also won the fiction category of the Victorian Premier's Literary Awards.[1] Musa was named one of Sydney's best young Australian novelists by the Sydney Morning Herald in 2015.[1] His debut novel "Here Come the Dogs" (2014) reached the longlist for both the Miles Franklin Award and the International Dublin Literary Award.[1]
