El-Sayed, the son of Egyptian immigrants, campaigned on universal healthcare, abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and ending unconditional military aid to Israel.[2][3] His victory came despite Stevens receiving over $60 million in outside funding, more than $30 million of which came from pro-Israel groups—a record for a Democratic Senate primary.[3] El-Sayed was endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.[2][3][4] If he wins the general election in November, El-Sayed would become the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.[2][3]
