Deposed Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced plans to return to Bangladesh in December from her exile in India, despite facing a death sentence in absentia handed down by a court over her role in suppressing protests in 2024.[1] Speaking in New Delhi, Hasina stated: "I know they may put me in prison, or kill me, or anything could happen, but I still have to go back."[1]
Hasina fled to India in 2024 following the uprising and has remained there since.[1] Bangladesh has repeatedly requested that India extradite her, but India has thus far refused to do so.[1] A United Nations report documented that nearly 1,400 people died during the crackdown on the uprising.[1] Meanwhile, current Prime Minister Tarique Rahman took office in February 2025 following an overwhelming electoral victory and unveiled a museum dedicated to the 2024 uprising.[1]
