Israel's military has launched precision strikes against targets in southern Lebanon, accusing Hezbollah of violating a ceasefire agreement.[1][2] According to Israeli military spokesperson Lt. Col. Ella Waweya, the strikes were carried out in response to what Israel characterized as a "blatant" breach of the ceasefire by the Iran-backed militant group.[2] The Israeli military ordered residents of Mansouri village to evacuate immediately, moving at least 1,000 meters northward.[1] Lebanese health authorities reported that the strikes on Tebbaneh town resulted in one death and twelve injuries.[1]
The military action comes as negotiations between Israel and Lebanese officials took place in Rome, aimed at withdrawing Hezbollah from southern Lebanon and having it replaced by the Lebanese military, which would allow Israel to withdraw from a unilateral buffer zone it has established.[2] Hezbollah has previously criticized Lebanese officials' participation in these talks.[2] The ceasefire took effect on June 20.[1]
Separately, negotiations between Iran and Oman regarding passage through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles one-fifth of the world's oil and natural gas trade, have shown progress.[1] U.S. President Trump indicated that an agreement on the Strait of Hormuz could be reached by Wednesday to help ease global economic pressure.[1] On the same day as the Israeli strikes, the U.S. State Department announced it was lifting secondary sanctions against three aviation companies affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.[2]
