A minor party within Spain's government coalition has filed a parliamentary motion questioning the country's commitment to jointly host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Morocco, citing a recent migration emergency at the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.[1] The move follows a surge of approximately 72,000 migrants entering Ceuta in a single week, with more than 80 deaths recorded as people attempted to swim from Morocco into the territory.[1] Of those who arrived, around 2,000 remained in Ceuta, including approximately 1,000 minors.[1]
Sumar, the small leftist party in Spain's coalition government, submitted the motion over human rights concerns related to the crisis.[1] A Sumar parliamentarian, Nahuel González, accused the Moroccan government of using migration flows as a political pressure tactic.[1] Portugal's minor party Livre has similarly expressed concerns about the co-hosting arrangement, emphasizing the importance of defending human rights in relation to the World Cup decision.[1]
