President Bola Tinubu has directed a significant wage boost for junior military personnel effective September, marking the second pay raise in as many months.[1] Junior soldiers through sergeants will see their salaries increased by 80 percent, while warrant officers up to colonels receive a 50 percent raise and brigadier generals through full generals get a 30 percent increase.[1] The salary adjustment will elevate monthly pay for junior soldiers to $132, up from $73 following a July increase that had raised the figure from $36.[1]
The government's investment in military compensation reflects broader efforts to address domestic security challenges. The annual defense payroll will expand from $484 million to $678 million under the new structure.[1] In his announcement, Tinubu stated: "The men and women helping us keep our homes safe must be supported and appreciated as they discharge their duties to the nation."[1] Last month, the president had authorized recruitment of 28,000 additional soldiers and establishment of four new army divisions.[1]
